Previous Sunday Sermon Recap"I have seen the Lord" What a glorious Easter weekend at CVBC! We were so lucky to have had 2 services to worship our King. Last Friday, Pastor Luke took us through John 19, one eye witness account of the crucifixtion of Jesus Christ. The service was somber and unique, as we attempt to identify what the death of Christ was like over 2,000 years ago. If you missed this service, Pastor Luke's message was recorded at 23 minutes and named "Behold, your Son" - watch here: Good Friday 2023. If you would like to watch the entire service including the special music at 57 minutes, here is the link: CVBC Good Friday 2023 - entire Livestream The best is not last! Easter Sunday - "I have seen the Lord" was titled for one eye witness account of the first person to see the resurrected Jesus. Pastor Luke explored John 20:1-18, and as we read, we saw what it must have been like to see the Lord after he rose from the dead. Pastor Luke noted many things, but it's important to realize that Mary did not recognize Him at first. There are a few theories why - but you really must "see" this message to learn more! Featured song for this Sunday's service
"Lord I Need You" Matt Maher wrote this song back in 2011 with Christy Nockels, Daniel Carson, Jesse Reeves, and Kristian Stanfill. They were writing songs at the time, for the Passion conferences that were so popular back then. He explains more of his personal story here in a short video: https://youtu.be/hjJ9WaYCmVk. He quotes C.S. Lewis' book about "The Four Loves", stating that "Need Love" is what this hymn is all about! Makes all the sense in the world, doesn't it? After reading these lyrics, you'll know why we featured this song, this week! Lord, I come, I confess Lord, I need You, oh, I need You Where sin runs deep Your grace is more Lord, I need You, oh, I need You So teach my song to rise to You Lord, I need You, oh, I need You You’re my one defense, my righteousness © Capitol Christian Music Group ... So now what?... thoughts from the Narrow Gate The last few weeks as a church, we've dug into the whole reason Jesus Christ came... He lived to Rise. He was born to die... So what happens after He rises from the dead? How do we know? What do we do with that now? Let's find out together, shall we? Matthew, one of his chosen 12, records this in chapter 29:16-20 - famously known as the Great Commision: "Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Mark, another chosen disciple records his version of the Gospel "Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at table, and he rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” And Luke, chosen by Jesus, records "Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high. And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God. So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs." That, friends, is what happens next! These guys who followed Jesus througout the last 3 years of His life got the special edition - eye witnesses to the Glory of God. But... the story continues! The very first book right after the 4 Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, is the book of Acts. This book was written by Luke, who actually begins this 28 chapter book with these words... "In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight." Acts 1:1-9 This chapter continues the story with the early church, from these men and women of the first church, and what happens to these first 120 people, and continues all the way to Rome, circa A.D. 62. From there, the New Testament continues with the book of Romans, to last book, the book of Revelation. The 'last' book, Revelation, is about the future. We're told what the world will go through (even as we know it now), and how it will end. Oh, and who wins! So, the question remains... now what? Tell someone. Tell everybody. Even tell those who won't listen. Be that somebody that people wonder about, like how do you go through something like that and still praise God? Practice the fruit of the spirit daily (Galations 5:22-23), for it's been said, you might be the only Jesus that people see/hear. Come on, church! That's what we're supposed to do now!!! Love to all, and till He comes again, Julie "Tell Somebody" Danny Gokey and Mandisa: https://youtu.be/vt-z1SeFdsw photo credit: kids church, Easter 2023 (even our little ones are telling somebody!) |
