Previous Sunday Sermon Recap"The Great Commission" If you missed last Sunday's sermon, you just plain missed the boat! It's ok though, the life raft links are posted below to grab on to ... A fantastic message from Harry Hammerling from Matthew 28:16-20! A great follow-up to our Passion Week here at CVBC, Harry gives us the information to follow Jesus' last command before He ascended back to heaven. Harry gives three items regarding discipleship to look at with our text: 1. Proper understanding We began by looking at the greek translation of the beginning of verse 19: "Go, therefore". Which Harry explains this unique word in greek means 'while going' - in the present tense! We are already 'going' if we believe in Christ, sharing whenever/wherever we are. We are to make disciples and this is to continue forever! Even further, Harry notes believers are not only commanded to share - but also commanded to be a disciple. 2. Proper application We learned to apply our understanding, we are to be dedicated - in other words "sold-out" for Christ. 3. Answers to excuses to not disciple Harry gives answers beginning with the question "are we getting it done?" And with certainty, we as humans, have many excuses! Featured song for this Sunday's service
"My worth is not in what I own" This is a new song for us this Sunday! Let's explore the reason behind the hymn... From a 2015 blog written by Keith Getty: "My Worth Is Not in What I Own" is a song that speaks to the subject of worth by reminding us that true significance is found in our identity in Christ. Kristyn and I recently wrote it with our good friend, Graham Kendrick, in an attempt to reclaim two glorious truths. The first is that we, as men and women created in the image and likeness of the Creator, are created with intrinsic worth. But there’s another truth we want to convey: given our pervasive rebellion—what R. C. Sproul calls “cosmic treason”—against the king, we are all unworthy of the value with which he crowns us. Yet God sent his Son so our worth might be found in something far grander than ourselves. In Christ, no longer do we look to our own accomplishments and achievements to find significance. We look instead to his perfect work on our behalf, and there our souls find the true sense of identity we so crave. The chorus of our song draws from the rich imagery of 1 Peter, which depicts Jesus as an inheritance and treasure far greater than anything this world has to offer. Read the rest here, and thanks be to God for songwriters who convey the Truth to us, every day! Keith Getty Blog The song has a simple, easy to learn melody. But the weight the lyrics bring are far from simple, as you see here: My worth is not in what I own
Not in the strength of flesh and bone But in the costly wounds of love At the cross My worth is not in skill or name
In win or lose, in pride or shame But in the blood of Christ that flowed At the cross I rejoice in my redeemer
Greatest treasure Wellspring of my soul And I will trust in him, no other My soul is satisfied in him alone As summer flowers we fade and die
Fame, youth and beauty hurry by But life eternal calls to us At the cross I will not boast in wealth or might
Or human wisdom's fleeting light But I will boast in knowing Christ At the cross I rejoice in my redeemer
Greatest treasure Wellspring of my soul I will trust in him, no other My soul is satisfied in him alone Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness My value fixed, my ransom paid At the cross And I rejoice in my redeemer
Greatest treasure Wellspring of my soul I will trust in him, no other My soul is satisfied in him alone And I rejoice in my redeemer
Greatest treasure Wellspring of my soul And I will trust in him, no other My soul is satisfied in him alone... My soul is satisfied in him alone Can't wait to sing this with everyone this weekend! ... Your worship team! CCLI#7024758

Humility...... thoughts from the Narrow Gate What does humility have to do with canines, you ask? Last week in our CVBC Friday am study, we took a look at this word humble, and it's application in Phillipians 2:3 with Dr. Steve Lawson's study called "Rejoice in the Lord". And truthfully, it's been sticking with me ever since. And, thankfully. Oh how we, as humans, forget about this daily, even hourly or more. I know I do. Paul - a prime example of humility - tells the Phillipians not to forget - "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves." Yes, we forget, don't we? This is the core of who Jesus was while He walked the earth. He also designed every creature on this earth to have humility as a component, a 'survival mechanism', so to speak. If you're familiar with dogs, the picture above is an act of humility - or submission - for self-preservation. Horses display this by walking away and lowering their heads to the ground, sometimes making a chewing movement with their mouths. Cats, well... (just kidding!). But literally, every species on earth does this. But, they do it to survive. To do it as a human, we must choose to do it. And not for survival (in most circumstances). To be humble as a human takes effort. Self-discipline. Dedication. Purposeful mindfulness. And many years of practice. We are not born in this world with humility as a personality trait. Although that would be helpful, we are born into sin. It reminds me of a conversation with a family member about that very thing. She gasped when I told her that young children even sin. That we are born with the sin nature. That perhaps her own 2 and 3 year olds were already sinners. She denied it, and I explained. Remember the phrase, 'terrible twos?' The child wants what they want, and now. They do whatever it takes to get it, from 'terrible' behaviors to asking someone else for what they want. They throw fits, they even learn to lie as young as 2-3. The last thing they want to do is be humble. This, friends, is where Christ comes in. He never, ever sinned. He never through tantrums, lied, asked others to take His place, you name it - he didn't do it. It is only through the power of the Trinity that Jesus survived 33 years, and never sinned. In fact, He even tells us He is humble. Gentle. Lowly. My favorite passage - Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” He knew we need Him to be this humble, gentle, lowly person - who must make others more important that ourselves. So He gives us a way to do just that. By coming to Him. Goes against modern philosophy lately, doesn't it? Even though there has been some mainstream attention, like the country song "Be Humble and Kind", if you look at those lyrics, it really has nothing to do with what humility really is. It's about being kind. There's been alot of social media lately too, saying to be kind, etc. etc. While that's good in it's own right, it didn't come from a standpoint of being humble. It came from a standpoint of modern, human fear of judgement. That's a story for another time! Jesus was the epitome of kind. But He was also humble - putting others before Himself so much that it confused His disciples. Consider the washing of the feet - even Peter told Him "you will never wash my feet". This one act of humility was the lowest of lows in that culture. Yet, there they were. We as a church family are experiencing many events in our lives together, that give us ample opportunity to practice humility. And I'm so grateful for that, as we learn and grow together we are practicing this very thing. This doesn't mean we give everything we have to all that need it - we are to be responsible for our own. There is no 'doormat' syndrome for believers. There is only humility - putting others more important that ourselves. Phillipians 2 continues with verse 4 "Let each of you not only look to his own interests, but also to the interests of others." Let's continue to practice this together, shall we? We have the best example any human could ever have. Yep. Jesus Christ.
