Previous Sunday Sermon Recap"Tragedy and Sovereignity" Genesis 34 - Rated M We hope we have your attention now... this is challenging bible chapter to preach! We're pretty lucky here at CVBC... We have a Pastor who is able to apply the Word of God to our current world, and who teaches expositionally - meaning chapter by chapter, verse by verse. And if you listen to this sermon, you will hear why this is so important! First of all, did you realize there is no mention of God in this entire chapter? But there is mention of many things. Worldly things. Lies, deceit, bribery, rape, shame, exploitation, anger and killing. Pastor Luke makes more than one important note. But these lies that Shechem told to get Dinah as his wife (this bribery and all the things that go with that), are "a lie - all the way back to the garden (of Eden)." God has already given all of these promises to Israel. Israel had no need for more... yet look what happens... So, where is God in all this? We know that He is there - in fact, the very first word of chapter 35 is "God." What can we do to apply this chapter to our lives today? Through these tragedies, God is still sovereign. Watch/listen from the links below. You'll agree that we are lucky at CVBC - to be able to hear the Truth from our Pastor Luke! Vimeo Channel: Vimeo video link Spotify Podcast: Audio sermon link

Featured song for this Sunday's service
"Whatever my God Ordains is Right" We get to learn another new song this Sunday! We hope you enjoyed singing "My worth is not in what I own" last Sunday - thanks Luke for finding that one! "Whatever my God Ordains is Right" was originally written by Samuel Rodigast in 1676 to comfort a sick friend. In it, he lays out what it means to deal with the problem of pain and suffering through the perspective of faith. Our God is sovereign and full of love, and every circumstance he brings us through is good and right and true. His promise is that he will never leave us in the midst of any adversity through which he takes us. Here are the lyrics: Whate'er my God ordains is right
His holy will abideth I will be still whate'er He does And follow where He guideth He is my God, though dark my road He holds me that I shall not fall And so to Him I leave it all And so to Him I leave it all Whate'er my God ordains is right
He never will deceive me He leads me by the proper path I know He will not leave me I take, content, what He has sent His hand can turn my griefs away And patiently I wait His day And patiently I wait His day Whate'er my God ordains is right
Though now this cup in drinking May bitter seem to my faint heart I take it all, unshrinking My God is true, each morn anew Sweet comfort yet shall fill my heart And pain and sorrow shall depart And pain and sorrow shall depart Whate'er my God ordains is right
Here shall my stand be taken Though sorrow, need, or death be mine Yet I am not forsaken My Father's care is round me there He holds me that I shall not fall And so to Him I leave it all And so to Him I leave it all Amen! Can't wait to sing this with everyone this weekend! ... Your worship team! CCLI# 11519802

First thing first..... thoughts from the Narrow Gate Here at our church, we pray often about keeping the Gospel at the center of who and what we are. Ever since we explored the Gospel Driven Church series last summer (Gospel Driven Church series), I feel we've made so much progress as a whole. Continuing on this journey together, we will improve all the more, this side of heaven. Remember when you were a new believer? A baby christian? Brand new to the faith, and all that comes with it? The excitement of doing life in a new way! I've been reminded of such recently. When the "Jesus Revolution" came out, I went and saw that. Reminded me of my own salvation "back in the day", when we were "Jesus Freaks." Apparently, now it's some kind of being "cool". Well, our parents didn't think so back then, did they? Nevertheless, we were getting saved. SAVED. I reflect on one scene of that film, about the middle of it, where Kelsey Grammar (playing Pastor Chuck Smith), was washing the feet of the "Jesus Freaks" who came in for service that day. That metaphor means so much - and not only what the film portrayed (one of the elder leadership was complaining about the dirt on the carpets!), but the humbleness of a community of servants. Christ-like servants, that faithfully gather a few times a week to be with one another, break bread together, read the Word together, and live out a Gospel driven church by helping one another whenever/wherever needed - yes, like us! I've also been reminded of the joy of new salvation. Being born again. Fresh, anew, almost exhilarating feeling. Like the kind in Acts 2, where everyone is filled with the Holy Spirit - all at once! Uh, wow! By the way, if you haven't heard, here are a few revivals going around the country right now, and if you haven't heard, one of the popular ones is the one at Ashbury University, where they have gathered for weeks/months now, praising God, singing together, praying together. All you have to do to learn more about that (and others) is google search it. It's truly amazing, the power of God being seen througout the country - a true revival. It's an amazing thing to see and read about, especially nowdays... How about a revival right here? Right where you are. Right now. Just like when we first believed... it changed everything, didn't it? It can change for you again today. John reminds the church at Ephesus in the book of Revelations, chapter 2: 2-5 "I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first..." He was talking to the church where the believers were not new in their faith. They had even done many things right, even "enduring patiently." But, they had forgotten about their joy. The joy of their salvation. "The love they had at first." And friends, that's what we need! It's similar to the prayers of a new believer - the kind that God answers, and boldly. It helps new believers see God's hand, His sovereignity and power, and if nothing else, confirming their belief in Him! We need our own revival. Right here in our hearts. Open your bible - ask God to fill you with the Holy Spirit - and read. He will answer you - in ways you cannot imagine! Oh, and give that testimony to a friend. Wear this revival everywhere you go. Literally wear it! And keep the first thing, first.
