Previous Sunday Sermon Recap"Arise and Go Home" Genesis 35 & 36! Pastor Luke wraps up our Genesis study (for now) with Jacob's call to go back home. He illustrates 3 points out of our text last Sunday: 1. Call to go home 2. Call to remember home 3. Call to stay home We listened to a quick review of chapter 34, where Jacob fails in multiple ways. That said, the reminder that God is still faithful - even when we are not - by examining the next chapter's first word. And, the repeated promises, reminding Jacob (v. 10-12), aren't just for him. Those are for us, too! Isn't this why we come to church every single weekend? We need these repeated promises - just like the reminders that Jacob built (pillars and altars), for his people to remember where and when some of these promises were remembered and given by God. In fact, this atonement that God gives permanently to make us right by Him is not lost. Jesus does not share worship. Even Jacob gets it, and tells his people to bury their foreign gods. After all, if you can bury a god, what kind of god is that? Chapter 36 is Esau's geneology mostly. We're told those lines of geneology are also important as time moves on through the bible. What happens to Esau is important, and his relationship with his twin brother, Jacob, later in Genesis. As we've studied through up to chapter 36 of Genesis, the consensus may be that all these names are there for a reason - and we know that reason. The historical account of the coming person of Jesus Christ. Reference slides: 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 "Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29: "But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God." Featured song for this Sunday's service
"Holy Holy Holy" "Holy, Holy, Holy was written by a man who revered God as wholly holy; a man who put such an effort into living for God that it eventually killed him. Reginald Heber had a reputation for two things: being a devout man of God, and being a wonderful poet; the perfect recipe for a legendary hymn." Read the whole, interesting story here: https://www.hymncharts.com/2022/09/07/the-story-behind-holy-holy-holy/ As you read the lyrics, you will see why this hymn has stood the test of time - since 1861! Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty Early in the morning Our song shall rise to Thee Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty God in three persons Blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy!
Though the darkness hide Thee Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see Only Thou art holy There is none beside Thee Perfect in power, in love and purity Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty All Thy works shall praise Thy name In earth and sky and sea Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty God in three persons Blessed Trinity Oh God in three persons
Blessed Trinity! Praise God for all these solid, true and historical hymns!

Home... thoughts from the Narrow Gate I've thought alot about home since Sunday, where we heard the Gospel preached through Genesis 35/36. Home can mean many things, can't it? It could be referred to a place (a house, for example), it could be referring to a time period (certain memories), it can also be a reference to somewhere we should be, as was in Jacob's case (Gen 35:1). What is home to you? What was home to Jesus? We might assume it was heaven for Jesus. Or was it? I think at different times in Jesus' earthly life, it might have been where his mother was. When we are children, that is all we know. But how old was Jesus when he first went to the temple? In fact, his parents couldn't find him during the Festival of the Passover, a very crowded time in the city of Jerusalem. Luke 2:49 records 12 year old Jesus wondering why his parents were looking for him. “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” Home. Different for us at different times in our lives. Point being, we long for home. God built this into us - He created us to long for home. His home. His eternal home - we belong to Him. We were created by Him to be with Him. It's that spiritual need we are all born with. We just find ways to fill that need with other things, places, time. We deny it. Sometimes some of us never realize it. Ever. This is the hope that I have - that one day, I will see the full benefit of believing in eternal life with Jesus. I will no longer have any needs - other than being with Him. After all, Jesus told his own disciples "My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? (John 14:2). Home - is where you seek it. Till He comes again, Julie "Home" Chris Tomlin: https://youtu.be/twL3v5r8s6o photo credit: http://www.clker.com/clipart-767128.html |
